I am a huge Troyka fan - having heard only the album (is that all there is? If there were more stuff available, I'd be sure to buy it!). I picked up the LP last year purely on the basis of a great looking cover and intriguing song titles - it was an Australian pressing, by the way - but have not been able to find out anything more about the band beyond some internet bits and pieces that I suspect weren't even based on research, just extrapolation from the very limited information on the record sleeve. So I'm very glad there's a site here and I'm looking forward to seeing what comes up.

I LOVE YOU THIS MUCH

Hey Rob!
Greetings from a long ago student of yours. I still recall lessons with you at the Clarence Ploof Guitar Center in Edmonton many moons ago. Me and a buddy did an interview with Troyka for our highschool paper down in the basement at Round Sound.
I had the pleasure of running into Ron at a Steve Palmer gig in Edmonton a few years ago and we actually watched the Grey cup game together the next day. Many fond rembrances. Holger Peterson (ex-Spiny Norman's Whoopee Bandmate..lololo) told me you were on the Island and teaching and still playing which was great to know. I remember the Volkswagon Beetle convertible you used to have and it's cool to see a pic of your Gibson guitar I remember so well. Ron burned me a CD of the Troyka album and I marvel at how well that groove you guys put down holds up to this day. Anyway I am just happy to have the opportunity to say Hi! and let you know that I am also still pickin' after all these years. I relocated to the Southern U.S. a few years ago and I still play every day. Gone are the dreams of playing in big time Rock bands, but I play in church 3 times a week and what ever other opportunities present themselves. I would like you to know that your lessons were a major influence and set a high standard for what was good and what wasn't which I carry on to this day. You look great in the picture with Kim Simmonds and I wish you much happiness and great guitar playing into the future.

I've been a Troyka fan since my teens (early 70s) after buying the album in a delete bin; the album cover was cool. It's a pitty there weren't more recordings to follow.
I got rid of all my vinyl a few months ago except for about 5 albums and Troyka was definitely one that I kept!
Love the old photos and info. Keep 'em coming.
le 30/08/2006 à 06:24
I guess your music was really unique because it has popped into my mind from time to time over the years. Long ago I was in the army and bought your album at the PX as I recall. It was around 1970-71. Unfortunately, I sold all my music a few years later to get some fast cash and never heard any of your songs again until surfing the web and finding your site here. Thanks for the memories.

some songs from my childhood to give to my brother...
Long story short...We loved listening to your music in the early 70's...my father happened upon an album of yours and gave it to us...we listened to it over and over
We especially liked...Rub a dub dub
I haven't been able to find your stuff anywhere...especially the songs with words...Rub a dub dub in particular
Our house burned in 1979 and we lost everything one of the albums was

Hi guys, really nice site. You have a fan here in Italy too... please x members of the band get back to me privately at feeel71@yahoo.it as hopefully (if Warner decides to licence and if a new official reissue label takes shape) there could be a new-legit reissue (w/royalties paid to the band) of the album on the way so I'd need your feedback, support, knowledge of available memorabilia and unreleased material et al.................I'll explain you privately!
Filippo Rostoni - Italy
From Troyka:
Filippo...The above email address doesnt work. Could you please send it to us privately by going to this page:

le 07/06/2007 à 21:38
We like the website - it's cool.
le 20/06/2007 à 03:17
I was lucky to have experienced Troyka, with Savoy Brown and Family, at the East Town, in Detroit.
I purchased the album when it was first released. Heard it originally on WABX. Unfortunately, the album was a part of my record collection lost in a divorce.
Thrilled to know that it is available, again. I plan to procure a copy, ASAP.
le 20/06/2007 à 22:57
Are you kidding me? Troyka. God, we spent hours listening to that album. Troyka became such an inspiration for the hundreds of young aspiring Edmonton musicians. We were so proud of them.
Glad to see they're on the web.
le 31/07/2007 à 12:27
I was an old guitar student of Rob's in the 60's at the Clarence Ploof Guitar Centre in Edmonton. I'm as impressed by Rob's playing then as I am now.
Hopefully some of your teaching rubbed off Rob!!
Still playing myself after all these years..check it out Rob!!
Thx for the great tunes Troyka !!
Rob Enns
le 13/08/2007 à 11:44
Wow. Amazing to come across your website. Has brought back a lot of good memories of the shows in Edmonton, AB. How can I get a copy of the old album - or a CD would even be better.
le 15/08/2007 à 21:51
Nice Nice ;)
le 29/10/2007 à 08:19
Keep on truckin!
le 11/12/2007 à 21:03
It is wonderful to see this guestbook. Troyka was one of the best bands from Edmonton, and I am old enough to remember how excited we were to hear them played on CKUA. I have listened to the album 100's of times over the years, and the spark of genius is there. Troyka was world class but never got the acknowledgement they deserved! All the best, guys.

le 06/01/2008 à 18:58
I'm 56 now,,,,,, still enjoy the tunes!!!!
le 15/01/2008 à 14:43
I recently heard Troyka mentioned on CKUA in Edmonton which I listen to via Internet.
I searched and found this site, then went searching on eBay and voila! I found the Troyka album from 1970. It is a reprint done by a company in Italy and is excellent - extremely well done. I cannot find any info on the publisher, but the album is labeled: Eroe Progresivo EPLP 005
What a treat to be listening again to this excellent album as I write this.
Dale.

Went to see Steven Malkmus and the Jicks (ex-Pavement) here in Edmonton tonight, and he said, that though he didn't want to presume to educate the audience on its own culture, he wondered if they were aware that the band Troyka is from Edmonton. Obviously he's a fan. Even though I never did hear the album, I'll bet I was one of the few in the audience that remembered that album cover. I think a friend, who bought everything in his collection from delete bins, had a copy. I also saw it in record stores myself, but I don't think I ever bought it. I'll have to see if I can get a copy of the CD, even though Allmusic isn't particularly kind to it.
le 27/10/2008 à 00:44
Hi Guys,
How I got to your site is a rather convoluted journey that is best related at some other time than right now(it's 1:35 AM).
I must say it is rather suprising to find a real 'live' site for you on the net. After all, it has been close to 40 years since the first time I heard the 3 of you at the fieldhouse with Canned Heat. You played an impressive set, out of nowhere, as it was to me at the time.
Right, I can't let myself get started here or I'll never get away from this computer.
It's great to see and hear you again. Just another reason to get a new turntable and get out your record and enjoy it anew.
Talk again later,
Sincerely,
Kerry Stenson
le 07/11/2008 à 15:15
Wow, a Troyka website! Can't believe it. I still have the vinyl and I'm actually listening to it right now as I write this. Is the album available on CD?

le 30/11/2008 à 18:28

Hi Mr.Edwards,
HEHE i am in your class and I found your Troyka sight..LOL.bye
le 20/07/2009 à 08:23
Great Band! Just read the article in Ugly Things. Yet annother great Canadian band from the era that couldn't achieve the popularity they deserved. Canada seems to have a secret rock history that we never get to own. Thanks you for what you have done.
le 25/09/2009 à 06:20
Great show at the Eastown Theater in Detroit!!!!
le 30/09/2009 à 17:43
I like your music, I think it has pure roots.
I think that your studio in your basement really helped shape your sound. Back in the 80s that was not the norm. I liked what I heard on the site.

Hey Mike! :D
le 06/12/2010 à 17:45
Very interested in hearing the album. A fan of psychedelic/rock of this era I have never heard of you until today. Grew up in Edmonton, but unfortunately in Grade 1 when the album was released. Do you recall a band called Graham and the Wafers from around that time?....Cheers...
le 11/12/2010 à 15:08
Haha I found this reccord and i trip with it all the time man!
le 29/12/2010 à 21:20
A very long long time ago (around 1967) or so, I took guitar lessons from one of you guys at Clarence Ploofs. It was for only one year but a memorable one. Those were good days back then. I would have been 14 or so at the time. Played a few local bands back then till the early 70's. Great to hear the tunes are still flowing.
le 31/01/2011 à 14:16
I remember seeing Troyka open for Canned Heat at the Kinsmen Field House. The group made a big impression on me. After all these years, I still remember the band and that concert.
le 21/02/2011 à 11:22
I purchased the Troyka album back in 1970. My favorite cuts were "Berry Picking," "March of the Turkeys," and "Rollin' Down the Back Road." I especially liked the growls at the beginning of "Back Road," as well as the scream before its instrumental interlude. Truly inspired! I lost the album many years ago. Could someone post "Rollin' Down the Back Road" on youtube, please? Thanks from an early fan.
le 21/02/2011 à 11:26
Born and raised in Parkview (Edmonton) myself and my brothers would ride our bikes to Doc Richards house for the open rehearsals.
I thought I was seeing the Beatles! Loved it. Big black curtains, huge amps (Saturn?) kids all sitting wide eyed and cross legged on the floor.
Never forget those nights
le 07/04/2011 à 22:39
i was at the fieldhouse concert they were great i had the album lent it to a friend who had the misfortune of losing their house to a fire i wish i could find a copy as it was a very good album
le 27/04/2011 à 19:48
I love this stuff.

Just read the article in Ugly Things mag and am very happy to learn about your wonderful band. Such diverse sounds, interesting arrangements and cool lyrics. Am also enjoying the earlier incarnation - Royal Family. Are there more songs from that period available? Kudos to you all. Best.

Good prog-rock, flavor of psych and ...?
